What Is Your Agni Type?

According to Ayurvedic tradition, each person has a unique digestive type (or Agni). This is something we are born with and something which also develops as we age. Your Agni type can change depending on your lifestyle, your age, and your diet.

The term ‘Agni’ means fire in Sanskrit. It is a term that is commonly used to describe a person’s digestive system. This is because the digestive system is the internal flame which converts food into energy.

Depending on the individual, some people find it far easier to break down their food, release toxins, and absorb nutrients. However, others can be left feeling fatigued and lacking in energy after their meals due to the fact their digestive system is working twice as hard as normal.

In Ayurveda, there are four different types of Agni:

SAMA AGNI

This is where there is a good level of digestive balance and only minor digestion issues occur. You can have a meal and not worry about feeling any type of discomfort afterwards.

Sama Agni Symptoms

  • 1-2 healthy bowel movements which are free from constipation.
  • You will have healthy skin, shiny eyes, and strong ojas (vigor).

VISHAM AGNI

This is where there is an irregular level of digestion and you have a highly unpredictable system overall. On occasion, you can eat without having any post-meal issues to contend with. However, at other times, you can have gas and bloating.

Visham Agni is connected to excessive Vata Dosha; highly unpredictable.

Visham Agni Symptoms

  • Constipation, Bloating, and Gas.
  • Loose stools can also be a common occurrence.

MANDA AGNI

This is where there is a very slow digestive process in the body. Perhaps you consume a meal and then feel full for the next 5 hours or potentially longer. You might tend to nap after meals because of how much energy is consumed by the digestive process.

Manda Agni is connected to the Kapha Dosha, which is the earth Dosha;  dense and heavy.

Manda Agni Symptoms

  • Sticky and large stools.
  • A very slow digestive process which normally means a slow metabolism.
  • You might gain weight more easily than others.

TIKSHNA AGNI

This is where there is a sharp digestive process in the body, and your digestive fire is burning considerably brighter than it should. Perhaps you need to go to the bathroom after you consume a meal or a snack. Spices, onion, garlic, and nightshades can also severely impact this as well.

Tikshna Agni is connected to the Pitta Dosha which is representative of fire; sharp and strong.

Tikshna Agni Symptoms

  • Stools will be loose.
  • Heartburn will likely occur after meals.

Knowing your agni type is important in establishing what types of foods your body can easily digest and balance for overall health. Remember, like anything else in Ayurveda, there is no ‘cookie-cutter’ approach. Every person is different and unique. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to get your specific agni type.
