Ayurveda, the ancient medical science with origins in the Indian subcontinent, has been around since 6,000 BCE. While this ancient healing system is extensive and includes several different principles and terminologies, one of the foundations of this system lies in the doshas.

What are Ayurvedic Doshas?

According to Ayurveda, every individual has a unique balance of three life forces- Vata (air element), Pitta (fire element), and Kapha (water and earth elements).

The predominant energy indicates the unique patterning of energies in a human body. The patterning of these three doshas determines all the physical, emotional, mental, and relational tendencies and characteristics of a human.

Every dosha is different with regard to its function. The Vata energy is responsible for movement, Pitta is the energy of metabolism and digestion, whereas Kapha is responsible for creating the body structure and lubrication in the body. For instance, an individual with a dominant Pitta energy is highly prone to acidity or other digestion-related ailments.

Relationship Between Vedic Astrology and Ayurvedic Doshas

Vedic Astrology, the science of prediction based on celestial bodies, is also said to have originated in India around 8,000 years ago. In fact, astrology and Ayurveda are deeply correlated in many aspects. According to Astrology, doshas, or the life energies in a human body as defined in Ayurveda, are also influenced by celestial bodies.

All the planets (Grahas) and zodiac signs (Rashis) have dominant doshas. It is possible for an experienced astrologer to analyze the birth chart of an individual to check the ruling planet and the planet that rules the 6th house (health & wellness) and predict their dosha imbalance even without knowing anything about the individual.

This prediction is solely based on astrology and the dominant doshas of the planets and zodiac signs. Here is a brief table to help you understand this correlation better-

Life Force

Zodiac Signs

Planets/Bodies

Vata

Virgo, Taurus, and Capricorn

Saturn and Rahu

Pitta

Sagittarius, Leo, and Aries

Sun, Mars, and Ketu

Kapha

Scorpio, Cancer, and Pisces

Moon, Venus, Jupiter

Apart from this, there is another category known as “Tridhatu.” Planets and zodiac signs belonging to this category have a good balance of all the three life forces.  Zodiac signs, Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra, belong to this category.  Mercury is the only Tridhatu planet.

For instance, if the ascendant ruling planet of an individual is in Mars, the person will mostly have Pitta as the dominant life force. Similarly, people from the Virgo zodiac sign mostly have Vata as the dominant force.

Can These Dosha Imbalances Be Treated?

Yes, with the help of astrology and Ayurveda, it is possible to treat or at least better manage the dosha imbalance. One of the most common outcomes of this imbalance is physical diseases. However, the imbalance can also impact your mental state and emotions.

Ayurveda lays a major emphasis on the principle of “using opposites for correcting dosha imbalance.” For instance, Vata or the air element is often linked to dryness and coolness. The opposite of this would be something moist and warm. So, an individual with Vata vitiation should prefer things that are moist and warm, including their food choices, fragrances, and even music.

Even astrologers can recommend several measures to help bring back the balance in these doshas. Consult a reputed Vedic Astrologer or Ayurveda practitioner for correct assistance.

The Interrelation Between Astrology and Ayurveda

The life forces or the doshas are only one of the examples of how deeply correlated astrology and Ayurveda are.

Correct guidance from a reliable practitioner can help treat a wide range of diseases and also resolve many different types of hurdles in life. After all, these elements have an impact on everything we do or even think. Correcting these imbalances can significantly improve the quality of your life.
